Includes commonplace books which contain diaries, notes on the weather, descriptions of the Village of Brooklyn, historical writings, cures for illnesses, and miscellaneous writings. Also legal drafts Furman prepared, copies of letters he wrote between 1823 and 1825, and handwritten version of his NOTES GEOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL RELATING TO THE TOWN OF BROOKLYN ... which was the first published history of the town. Collection also includes three essays he wrote: "A Sketch of the History of the Theatres in the United States," "Vanderdonck's New Netherlands," which is an analytical discussion of a Dutch manuscript, and "Ancient Chronology of New York," written in 1822. The latter essay records major events between 1492 and 1674, and is written in an account book kept by John Tyler of New York City between 1778 and 1781.

Gabriel Furman (January 23, 1800-November 11, 1854) was a respected historian of early Brooklyn. Among his works were the Notes Geographical and Historical, Relating to the Town of Brooklyn, on Long-Island (1824), still available in a recent reprint. Little is known of Furman's youth; he attended Columbia Academy in Bergen (now part of Jersey City), New Jersey, from 1814-1816.
